STEAM Ahead is a new, national education program that couples interdisciplinary STEM education with real-world, problem-based learning. Research shows that STEM-science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-skills are increasingly necessary in our knowledge-based economy. However, like science and technology, art and design are also poised to transform our economy, encouraging the kind of creativity that enables innovation. With this in mind, we have added art to transform STEM to STEAM.
We know that today we need to think differently about what, when, where and how young people learn. It is important to supplement the education youth receive in school with a variety of additional enriching and high-quality learning experiences. We also know that young people-particularly those we consider to be most "at-risk"-are failing to achieve the critical skills that will enable them to participate effectively and successfully in the world and in the workplace.
We believe that STEAM skills are important for all students, not just those aspiring to a career in the sciences. Acquiring these skills is critical for all young people to ultimately affect change in their own lives and their communities, and pave the way for a successful future. STEAM Ahead!
In our pilot year, we will positively impact the outcomes of 100 youth in 5 communities across Canada. Young people participating in STEAM Ahead! will have increased engagement in learning, academic gains in STEAM subjects, and enhanced social skills.
