The month of March marked a year since the national day of healthy distance was declared due to the COVID 19 pandemic, leaving more than 945,000 basic-level students without classes. At Crecemos DIJO we have been hand in hand with families to help them mitigate the adverse impacts that the pandemic has brought to their lives such as job losses, economic crisis and stress due to confinement. To date, many families have experienced COVID-19 infection and others have lost family members. Exposure to stress has also increased rates of domestic violence. Against this background, Crecemos DIJO has remained as a support for families, providing nutritious food, academic support and support for recreational activities, which has significantly reduced stress. Fortunately, in Oaxaca the epidemiological traffic light is yellow, which means that activities can be carried out with a healthy distance, so we have restarted the sports classes for soccer and basketball. Laughter and voices of children who come to practice sports can already be heard at the María de Guadalupe Community Center. On-site activities have been resumed with strict hygiene and safety protocols. Going back to school has allowed the children to reduce stress and exercise, as 7-year-old Ximena tells us:
“… I already wanted to go back to my soccer classes because I missed my friends, I really like to play, sweat, laugh, I already wanted to see my teacher. My mom works so we stay alone all day with my little brothers, and she bored me. Now I am happy because in my classes we do fun activities ... "
Crecemos-DIJO remains thanks to your generous help. Children need us today more than ever. Confinement is not experienced the same in all homes, each one has special circumstances and special needs. For children who live in adverse contexts, a soccer class, a nutritious food, a person who is interested in their life, can be the difference.
