The aim of the project is to empower poor urban women by creating business opportunities for widows with HIV/AIDS and those who are sole guardians of children orphaned through HIV/AIDS.
Since 2007 Development Africa has opened 57 shops with a 96.5% success rate of continued and successful business.
After the women have completed their first workshop and training seminar they are then sent to find a location that they would like to rent. They work closely with the support group to ensure that the items they want to sell are in demand in the area and that it’s a suitable place and in a good location.
They are then given the funding needed to purchase their shops stock of goods and supplies. They are expected to turn in all receipts and keep a detailed record of what is bought. After the shop has been open for a few months, it is visited to ensure that everything is running properly.
In December 2017 six additional women have been selected for new businesses that have been sponsored through funds raised on GlobalGiving as well as from other sponsers and they have started to look for shops to rent and the shops should be up and running in the next few weeks.
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
