Women for Afghan Women's (WAW's) #ByHerSide program in Afghanistan provides access to critically-needed health services including life-saving treatment and surgery for survivors of rape, incest, physical abuse, or violence by family or community members; OBGYN services for pregnant women (including supplements to reduce incidences of malnutrition); and birth and after-birth services in proper medical facilities. For a full scope of WAW's life-changing programs, visit womenforafghanwomen.org.
Afghanistan is one of the worst places on earth to be a woman because of endemic gender-based violence. According to research by Global Rights, nearly 90% of Afghan women experience gender-based violence, most perpetrated by family members. Additionally, health services are very basic: surgery services are not comprehensive; hygiene amongst medical professionals is poor; resources are scarce, including basic medicine (such as pain relievers); and malnutrition is commonplace.
Your support to WAW and to the #ByHerSide program will provide 500+ women and children with critical and immediate emergency services and/or resources to provide: treatment for survivors of rape or incest, intensive emergency and safety counseling, medical services/procedures, safe shelter and housing, and successful (safe) reintegration of women and children into the community. Education and advocacy for communities will change and ultimately eradicate harmful practices/beliefs against women.
WAW was founded in 2001 to advocate for women then living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Now, WAW is the largest Afghan women's organization in the world, standing #ByHerSide for over 25K Afghan women and girls, and training over 330K individuals on women's rights -- all thanks to supporters like you! #ByHerSide is just one of WAW's comprehensive programs and services, which are saving lives everyday and creating long-term cultural change in eradicating violence against women in Afghanistan.
