Sports for Change promotes sports through vibrant sports clubs in rural communities through the Don Bosco institutions. By introducing advanced sports equipment, training and structured club activities, the initiative seeks to empower children and youth-particularly those from marginalised backgrounds-with opportunities to excel in sports. The clubs also offer alternative healthy avenues for the young to spend their time, develop life skills and make healthy life choices.
Children in rural Kerala, though talented and enthusiastic, lack access to professional sports facilities and support systems. This limits their potential and hinders the development of social and interpersonal skills, making them vulnerable to isolation and negative influences. Alarming rises in substance abuse-330% in NDPS cases among college youth and 40% under 18-are symptoms. Underprivileged children with limited opportunities are at higher risk of dropping out of school and getting misled.
Sports for Change offers underprivileged children access to sports, professional coaching, and community-based clubs. Beyond athletics, these clubs foster life skills like teamwork, discipline, and leadership, empowering children to lead addiction-free lives, opt for sports careers and build brighter futures.
Better health and energy levels among boys and girls Increased school attendance and academic performance Decreased rates of depression and social anxiety Decrease in addictive behaviours and use of drugs Decreased instances of criminal activity, early marriage and child labour More young people opting for careers in sports and the development of a sporting culture
