The Miki Sports for Peace, Development & Social Cohesion Initiative is a transformative programme that leverages the universal language of sport as a catalyst for peacebuilding, youth empowerment, and social integration in fragile and conflict-affected communities in Cameroon. Through structured sporting activities, psychosocial support, leadership development, and inter-community tournaments, the programme will directly reach at least 10,000 people across conflict-affected communities.
Communities targeted by this programme are grappling with persistent inter-group tensions rooted in ethnic divisions, economic inequality, political marginalisation, and historical trauma. The consequences are severe: Youth unemployment rates exceeding 60% in target areas, driving recruitment into criminal and extremist networks Recurring cycles of communal violence that displace families, disrupt education, and destroy livelihoods Breakdown of social trust between communities.
IF young people from divided communities engage together in structured, coach-facilitated sporting activities, combined with psychosocial support and leadership development, THEN they will build positive inter-group relationships, develop non-violent conflict resolution skills, and increase their stake in peaceful coexistence, BECAUSE sport creates safe, equal-status contact between divided groups, and sports builds the social, emotional, and civic skills needed for sustainable peace.
Goal: To foster peaceful coexistence, social cohesion, and inclusive development in conflict-affected communities through sport-based programming. Specific Objectives Objective 1: Strengthen social cohesion and reduce inter-community tensions through structured inter-community sport activities. Objective 2: Build the life skills, leadership capacity, & civic engagement of at least 10,000 - with particular focus on girls and marginalised youth - through integrated sport & development programmin.
