The twin powers of education and sport are transforming the lives of young Syrian refugees in refugee camps in Beirut, Lebanon, helping to ease the challenges of living in exile in extreme poverty. Aspirations are being raised, skills developed and ambitions for the future.
Students at the three schools established by the Alsama Centre – two in Shatila Camp and one in Bourj Camp – are achieving amazing results. Illiteracy is eliminated within the first three months of students joining and attendance rate is above 97%. The daily curriculum includes Arabic, English, Mathematics and Information Technology. Another significant outcome is that girls are increasingly saying no to early marriage.
‘I love the activities the teachers do every week. I feel safe and that no one is going to hit or harm me. I am improving and becoming better because of the education I am receiving at Alsama. My ambition is to change the world by changing the way that other people think.’ Alsama student
The cricket programme is also going from strength to strength, with players taking part in their first international competition when invited to play in a festival staged by a group of foreign workers. The Alsama team of 15 year olds – half girls and half boys were only narrowly defeated and their opening bowlers were as fast as anyone in the competition. Supported by online youth sport leadership training delivered by Youth Sport Trust International, some young players have also progressed to become assistant coaches and are relishing their new responsibilities.
‘I love to make children happy’ says one young coach.
Please help Youth Sport Trust International to continue our support for Alsama. THANK YOU
