Youth Sport Trust International is passionate about the power of sport to change young people's lives. We are seeking funding to expand our youth sport leadership training for young Syrian refugees living in camps in Beirut, Lebanon.
Shatila Refugee Camp was set up as a tent village in Beirut in 1947 as a temporary home for displaced Palestinians. Today it is a slum which has become home for some 40,000 refugees and is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. It has witnessed war, an infamous massacre and waves of refugees. Living conditions are poor and dangerous. The streets are narrow, housing is cramped, there is a lack of clean water and armed factions run different areas. Access to education is limited.
Following a chance introduction, YST International offered to provide online training during the Covid pandemic to support the development of leadership skills firstly in girls and then in boys so that they could lead activity sessions and become role models for their peers. The response was hugely positive with young people demonstrating resilience and commitment, seeing the training as an opportunity to enhance their education, raise their aspirations and achieve their tremendous potential.
With your help we know can achieve so much more. Subject to securing funding we plan to visit and provide face to face support, engaging more young people and their coaches to develop life skills through sport.
