A Spring Fling!
Frisbee training in East Amman
Spring was a success at Reclaim Childhood! We started off with a community play day, bringing together almost 100 girls from the three hub sites with coaches and American volunteers for a day of play. The event included a track relay race, soccer games, and group bonding activities to encourage cultural exchange and community cohesion across the Amman, Zarqa, and Mafraq groups, as well as the visitors. Ice cream and conversation provide the perfect end to a great day!
Nini Hamrick, an American volunteer, reflected on the event, saying, “This week was the first time I got to see, hear, and feel RC’s impact for myself. The ‘right to play’ means seeing these girls play hard - sprinting around a track or hustling to make a pass.”
After a break for Ramadan, RC transitioned into an exciting frisbee season. For five weeks, the girls learned all the frisbee basics while having social discussions on integrity, leadership, and climate change.
“In all games there's always a referee, but in frisbee we don't have one. So it taught me how I should follow the rules and how to know the right from the wrong,” said Eman, a 12-year-old Zarqa participant, when asked about the values of frisbee.
With the spring behind us, we’re looking forward to our upcoming flagship summer programming, with over 600 from 8 nationalities set to participate! At camp, the girls engage in different sports and activities and then develop a sense of competition during summer leagues, participating in soccer, basketball, and frisbee games. Never a dull moment at RC!
We invite you to join Reclaim Childhood in supporting play by donating on our project page on July 12th, as GlobalGiving will be matching a percentage of all donations over $100 for July Bonus Day. With your help, we hope to make this an amazing summer for girls in Jordan - thank you for your continued support of our programming!
