Refugees in the Democratic Republic of Congo are among the most forgotten ones in the world, at all levels (International, Regional, National and Local Levels ) they are not considered. This year in December from 12-15th, 2023 the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is hosting the second Global Refugee Forum in Geneva. This remains one among the best opportunities to raise issues of refugees in DRC. But this is only possible if Refugees and Actors of the Civil Society attend.
Refugees in DRC are facing the worst situation because they are totally abandoned over the years, generally they are the cause of the current tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and many have been massacred during Rwanda Military interventions in DRC. They do not have refugee documents, they do not access humanitarian relief aid, they lack physical protection, among others. Those to benefit are all refugees in DRCongo who will be recognized.
This project will solve the problems in this way: For the first time refugees in North Kivu Province and in other Provinces of DRC Refugee Representatives will come together in order to agree on their key priorities which should be presented to Geneva, and for the first time world we hear the voices of refugees in DRC, Key stakeholders from Government, Humanitarian Organizations, UN Agencies and the Civil Society will come together to harmonize views on the situation of refugees in DRC,
In long term is mostly to ensure that refugees in the Democratic Republic of Congo are not left behind and their issues are included as part of the national and global priorities. In most cases solutions will be considered in order to alleviate the situation of refugees and refugees will be fully protected in the Democratic Republic of Congo, This will contribute to peace in the Great Lakes Region as once protected Rwanda will no longer perceive them as threats.
