Francine's 2016 Term 2 Grades and KF Newsletter

By Oliver Barry | President & Co-Founder

The second academic term has finished in Zambia, and 2016 is proving to be a successful year for KF. At this time, we would like to update you on the highlights of the term and achievements of our current students and alumni.

Here are some of the high points of the second academic term in Lusaka:

  • Many KF scholars at Chalo Trust School took part in the school’s annual talent show. Our gifted students danced, sang songs, presented poems, and acted in self-written plays.
  • In June, KF welcomed its eighth Princeton in Africa fellow, Jessica. Jessica is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and has coordinated a scholarship program at UC Berkeley for the past 4 years. During this upcoming year, she intends to help KF establish a strategic plan for supporting its alumni in pursuing post-secondary scholarships and other opportunities, as well as foster and define KF’s relationship with its alumni.
  • Yale Young African/Global Scholars: In July and August, KF supported seven Grade 10s and 11s to attend three conferences around the world: Ased, Cararise, and Nelly attended YYAS in Harare, Zimbabwe; Vincent and Martin attended YYAS in Accra, Ghana; Kellyson and Jackson attended YYGS at Yale University, USA. These conferences are an academic and leadership program for African high school students who have the talent and drive to make meaningful impact in their communities.
  • KF hosted thirteen high schools girls from Hotchkiss and Hathaway Brown schools, as well as their teachers, a KF trustee, Tina, and her daughter, Kayla. They engaged in a weekend retreat full of games and intercultural discussions, and then spent a week in Lusaka, staying at Chalo Trust and visiting Pestalozzi, engaging in sporting activities and providing tutoring in the evenings. We look forward to continued partnership with these great schools!
  • KF held our annual reunion event, bringing together current students and alumni. This year, we celebrated 10 years of building a strong foundation for the future!
  • August was a joyous and sad time, as many KF alumni started their tertiary programs. We bid adieu to four students going abroad to start new programs, including: Mailess, University of California, Berkeley; Titani, University of British Columbia; Armand, EARTH University; Nathan, African Leadership Academy, and congratulated three others starting full-time programs at universities in Zambia: Barbara, National Institute of Public Administration; Edna, City University; and Ngosa, Chreso University. Many others returned to their programs both abroad and locally.
  • Kucetekela Foundation became the newest member organization of the HALI Access Network, an association of organizations in Africa that work with high-achieving, low-income (HALI) students to access higher education opportunities.

Attached are Francine's grades for Term 2, 2016 and the KF Newsletter for the term.

Our organization could not do this work without your support and your support is making a critical difference in the lives of our students, their families and communities.  At this time of year, we want to remind you of the impact your contribution is having and ask you to consider supporting KF in 2017.  The cost of sponsoring Francine for 2017 is $5,700.  All administrative costs are fully covered by the Board of Trustees which allows KF to direct 100% of your donation to our students.

2-3% of the Zambian population enrolls in college or university.  To remind you, KF, now with 36 graduates, has more than 80% of our alumni enrolled in tertiary education!  Your contribution therefore makes a tremendous impact and develops well-equipped young leaders.

Yours gratefully,

Oliver
