2016 Term 1 Update

By Oliver Barry | Co-Founder & President

The first academic term has finished in Zambia, and 2016 is off to a fantastic start for KF.  At this time, we would like to update you on the highlights of the term and achievements of our current students and alumni.

As of January, 40 students currently attend quality secondary school thanks to scholarships provided by Kucetekela Foundation, which represents the largest number of scholarships ever given at one time in our organization’s history.  Additionally, there are now 36 KF alumni studying across the world.

Here are some of the high points of the first academic term in Lusaka:

  • Jackson and Kellyson were accepted to the prestigious Yale Young Global Scholars Program. In July, they will fly to the US to attend the Sustainability, Energy & Environment session, which is held on Yale’s campus in New Haven, Connecticut.
  • KF scholars at Chalo Trust School earned the top academic position in Grade 8, 9, 10 and 11!  While KF scholars at Pestalozzi Education Centre earned the top academic position in Grade 8, 10 and 11!
  • KF held a new student orientation attended by all 10 new Grade 8 students and their parents/guardians where they were welcomed to the KF family and met the school principals.
  • Christian, Kellyson, Mutinta, and Susan represented Pestalozzi Education Centre and Chalo Trust School at a poetry show put on by Bittersweet Poetry, a Zambian organization that offers youth a platform for poetry and artistic expression.
  • Lydia, Faith, Francine, Emmanuel, and Gift ran in the Independent Charter Schools of Zambia (ICSZ) cross country competition, propelling Chalo Trust to victory over the 18 competing schools.

There have been several remarkable accomplishments by KF alumni that we are proud to share:

  • Mailess (class of 2013) earned a MasterCard Foundation scholarship to study at the University of California-Berkley.
  • Kate (class of 2013) and Tony (class of 2015) received a full scholarship from Our Moon, a new KF partner organization to attend Hillcrest National Technical School, an A Levels program in Livingstone, Zambia.
  • Nathan (class of 2015) has been accepted to African Leadership Academy in South Africa where he will begin in September 2016.
  • Titani (class of 2015) was awarded a MasterCard Foundation scholarship to study biology at the University of British Columbia where she will join KF alumni Bwalya and Justine.
  • Dennis (class of 2011)departed in October to study engineering on full scholarship at African Leadership University in Mauritius.
  • Vivian (class of 2014) received a full scholarship to Pestalozzi International Village, an A levels program in Hastings, UK.
  • Margaret (class of 2014) flew to Vladivostok, Russia in October to begin a six-year medical biophysics program on full scholarship at Far Eastern Federal University.

With these recent admissions, 89% (32/36) of KF alumni have either been accepted to, are currently enrolled in, or have completed a tertiary program.

Our KF students continue to excel in secondary school and beyond while earning a positive reputation for their hard work, intelligence, and care for their community. We would not be in a position to support the development of these young leaders without your support, which is making a decisive impact in the lives of our students, their families and communities. We are inspired by the direct effect your gift has had on Francine's life and future and hope you are too!
