Dear Supporter ,
I am pleased to share our latest progress update for the “Empower Children with Disability in Kenya” project. Over the past period, we have focused on both practical support and awareness-raising to create a more inclusive environment for children with disabilities, especially in underserved communities.
1. Community Outreach – Kibera Slum
We held an outreach session with parents and caregivers of children with disabilities in Kibera. The forum provided:
Encouragement and support through experience-sharing and a motivational talk from a parent of a child with disability.
Distribution of foodstuffs (maize flour, beans, rice, cooking oil, and sugar) to 15 households to ease economic strain.
Awareness sessions on children’s rights and available support services.
2. Inclusive Fun Day & Free Therapy Services
We organized an Inclusive Fun Day to raise public awareness and promote acceptance of children with disabilities. Key activities included:
Interactive games and lessons involving children with and without disabilities.
Awareness messages through speeches and lessons.
Free occupational therapy and speech therapy for over 20 children with developmental disabilities, with parents receiving home-based therapy guidance.
Engagement of community members, many of who offered volunteer support for inclusion efforts.
3. A Story of Impact – Meet Chemu
Chemu, a 7-year-old girl from Uthiru, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age two. Her mother, Grace, shared that accessing therapy had always been a challenge due to cost and distance. At our Inclusive Fun Day, Aisha received occupational therapy sessions for the first time in months. The volunteer therapist also taught Grace simple exercises she could do with Aisha at home. Grace left the event in tears of gratitude, saying, “Today gave me hope again. I can see a future where my daughter continues to improve.”
4.Partnership with Good Shepherd School.
5. Outcomes Achieved
Strengthened parent networks and reduced isolation among caregivers.
Immediate relief from hunger for supported families.
Increased public awareness on disability inclusion, with over 50 community members engaged.
Improved access to therapy services for children in need.
6. Next Steps
We plan to hold yearly Inclusive Fun Days and expand outreach. We are also building stronger partnerships with therapy professionals to ensure ongoing support for children.
We plan to support children access inclusive education through sponsorships.
We plan to launch a limitless club that will cater for youth with disabilities harnessing talent through sports, arts and offer life skills.
We plan to expand the learning support unit at Good Shepherd School and increase enrolment.
Additionally, we aim to strengthen community awareness campaigns and build more partnerships to scale inclusive education across other schools in Kenya.
We remain deeply grateful for the support of GlobalGiving and all donors, whose contributions are making a real difference for children with disabilities and their families in Kenya.
Warm regards,
Edyth Bones
