The Nkwen Community Forest Project is an initiative aimed at restoring a piece of our heritage while addressing pressing environmental challenges. Located in the North West Region of Cameroon, this project focuses on planting 400,000 trees across over 300 hectares of ancestral land in Ateila Community in Nkwen. This land holds deep cultural significance for the Nkwen Fondom, as it is home to a 500-year-old ancestral shrine. Surrounded by eight neighboring quarters, the area serves over 50,000 residents and features five important water catchments that provide vital resources for the community.
On July 27, 2024, we organized a Capacity Building Workshop on Reforestation and Climate Change Mitigation at the Nkwen Palace Hall. This event welcomed more than 100 community members, including high school and university students, quarter heads, youth leaders, and civil society stakeholders. Together, we learned about the impacts of deforestation and climate change and discussed ways to combat these issues. The workshop concluded with a hands-on tree planting demonstration, inspiring participants to take action.
In the spirit of community, we successfully recruited 250 volunteers who are eager to help with our tree planting efforts. These individuals come from various backgrounds but share a common goal: to make a positive impact on our environment. Their enthusiasm and commitment are vital to the success of this project.
The official launch of the Nkwen Community Forest Project took place on August 2, 2024. The event brought together students, community leaders, government representatives, and other stakeholders. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our collective commitment to caring for our environment and cultural heritage.
We kicked off our tree planting activities in the Nkwen forest reserve, a 300-hectare area designated by the Paramount Fon of Nkwen for this initiative. In just three months, our dedicated volunteers planted 26,540 trees. Each tree represents hope for our future and a commitment to preserving this land for generations to come.
As we reflect on our journey, it becomes clear that the Nkwen Community Forest Project is about more than just planting trees. It’s about reconnecting with our roots, strengthening our community bonds, and nurturing our environment. Through workshops, events, and planting sessions, we have fostered a sense of ownership and pride among community members.
