We have been operating in one of the poorest parts of Uganda for approximately 20 years. The area we cover suffers from high levels of maternal mortality and motherless babies then require care. NOTDEC has been providing this care in a purpose built facility, providing for these children in our centre and returning them to families in the community until they are independent. We provide for all their needs, including early years care, food, clothing, accommodation, school fees etc.
The problem is abandoned babies with no mothers may die very quickly in a poor region where extended families do not have resources to manage. NOTDEC commits to caring for and supporting these babies and children through school years to independence.
Without external support NOTDEC cannot guarantee to provide the care required to sustain these babies and children. It costs around US$ 1400 a year for baby milk alone for one child, and this is not readily available within the rural areas we serve. Once a baby is accepted into our care, we commit to care for them until adulthood.
We are giving these children a hope and a future. We have many examples of children who are now reaching adulthood who have trained for work and now able to support themselves and their families.
