We need help sponsoring three grandmothers (babas) to visit abandoned and orphaned children in Pleven, Bulgaria. One Heart Children's Foundation hires Bulgarian grandmothers ("babas") to give individual attention to these children in care centers. This is an invaluable program that helps the children receive the individual attention they need while helping grandmothers with purpose and an income. It is a win-win for all.
Family Care Centers in Bulgaria work hard to care for abandoned or orphaned children, some with disabilities. However, they are understaffed and not able to give children the full attention they need, including valuable activities for the children to grow and be successful.
Our grandmothers visit the children on a weekly basis to give individual attention to the children by reading to them, cuddling with them, helping them with homework, and taking them outside on walks. Babas also help little ones bathe, brush teeth, and prepare for their day or bedtime. Some are assigned to work one-on-one with children with severe mental or physical disabilities. This helps the children do more than exist, and actually learn and grow.
Children who receive this dedicated attention show remarkable improvements. 1. Children begin to meet physical and cognitive markers. 2. Bonding with a safe adult now, these children are better prepared to integrate into foster families, adoptive homes, or society later in life. 3. The emotional stability gained today reduces the risk of future institutionalization or abandonment when they become parents themselves. 4. Grandmothers find meaning and purpose in their life and have an income.
