happy girls - M and P

M and P pictured here, are two girl children who came to Sphoorti as orphan girls in 2009 from a tiny village in Telangana. M's parents passed away in an accident while P's father died of cardiac arrest.

For more than 7 years, M and P were staying in rented premises of Sphoorti in a impoverished neighborhood. The premises did not have adequate bathrooms and space for bunk beds. The school was 3 km away and since the school was a private school, we were able to afford only tuition fee and not travel costs. These children used to travel 3 km one way every morning and evening. In addition, the landlords of the rented premises were reluctanct to spend anything on maintenance and repairs in the buildings. We were seen as vulnerable people who would not dare to vacate the building and get stranded on the streets.

At one point, our team realized that having our own land and buildings would help us get rid of minor irritants and give us the much needed flexibility to plan construction as per the children's needs.

After vigorous efforts and interaction with the State Government officials for more than a year, Sphoorti was granted a 3 acre plot in 2010. In 2014, Sphoorti started construction of compound wall followed by construction of a 25,000 sq ft building consisting of Dormitories.

“The new campus though under construction have given us much needed facilities - spacious rooms, bunk beds to sleep on, enough bathrooms, lot of fresh air to walk around and play and most importantly a beautiful building which we call our Home and not Hostel. I learnt a lot from other girls who were learning with me,” M explains. P feels happy as well. She says“The new community and neighborhood is very friendly, the Government school authorities treat us like family. We have three jewels in our building - a library, computer lab and a sick room under construction. Our huge study hall and kitchen make us feel that we are cared for much beyond the basic needs."

In the new environment, we do not have to worry about paying rent. There are no hostile neighbors who look at our children with disdain. Nobody in the school brands our children as "Orphanage Children."

After moving into the new building, we have been able to install CC Cameras to ensure discipline and safety, concentrate on providing good food and clothing, plan our academic activities with more concentration. You will be happy to know that our children won 63 prizes in the last academic year in their school. Our children topped in almost all Grades. Three girls Sh, Si and Va got 9.3 GPA in their  STD X examinations and stood second in their School.

As on today, we spent more than Rs 3 crore on the building, compound wall and basic infrastructure like electricity - poles, wires and transformers. Certain rooms are under construction. We currently have 150 children in the campus and once the rooms are done, we will add another 50 children.

We thank all our donors and well-wishers for their support and faith in our organization and children.
