Thank you for your continued support.
2016 was a fantastic year, we reached 900 schools across the country, engaging with over 700,000 children. We also ignited the curiosity of children to read for example, one child could not imagine she failed to Spell the word Hallelujah and decided to read as much as possible and be ready spell better this year.
In the recent national exams, we have also received wonderful reports that all our participants who sat the exams passed with flying colors. This is currently evidenced by how many schools and parents are reaching out to us, asking about how their schools and children could participate in this year's Spelling Bee. This year our target is to reach 1,500 schools (over 1,000,000 children) and our phones are already buzzing and we are becoming busy bees ourselves as we dive into this exciting program year.
We just came back from Lira, in Northern Uganda, over 300 kilometers out of the City, where we conducted a Training of Trainers with key stakeholders in the region, in partnership with World Vision. The District officials and Head Teachers who attended are super inspired and motivated to get to work. World Vision is working with us to extend our Spelling Bee programs to 120 schools in the region that they work with.
At the end of the week, we also participated in the stakeholders meeting at City Hall, to come up with strategies to improve a reading culture in the city. This is in preparation for DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Week - one of the activities we carryout together with other stakeholders to promote a reading culture.
In a few days time, some of our team members are heading out to Mombasa to attend a planning meeting for the African Spelling Bee. We are part of the founding organisations for the African Spelling Bee and shall be having our second African Spelling Bee in July after a successful first one in Johannesburg, South Africa last year.
This year, we are also introducing a Writing Competition to encourage children who may be interested in writing. The top stories will be published as ebooks, making these children authors. We are also changing the preparation materials that we provide to schools and children to prepare from and level the playing field. Our handbook is transitioning to a workbook, enabling children to read stories and understand words in context, rather than rote memorisation. We can't be more excited about this!
Join in to help us achieve our goals and enable a million childen across Uganda to participate in the Spelling Bee.
