This project provides a platform for over 10,000 learners in Juba, Yei River and Kapoeta South counties in South Sudan through inter-school spelling bee, speed quiz, speech, debate, and MDD, fostering creativity, vocabulary growth and English proficiency while boosting confidence & school retention. It culminates in the South Sudan National Spelling Bee, where students aged 8-18 compete from intra-school contests to the grand finale, with top six performers advancing to the African Spelling Bee.
A bigger percentage of South Sudan's 12 million people are children below 18, and the future belongs to them. Unfortunately, many of them do not finish school on time. This is caused by, among other reasons, low competence, low literacy rates and lack of interest. South Sudan is ranked lowest in the region in terms of literacy.
This project was created to enable children to improve their literacy, learn vital social skills, and develop a positive attitude towards life, helping motivate them to complete school and transform them into change agents and credible leaders. We desire to create a new operating system and instil values of character, responsibility, excellence, empathy and discipline. Learners will work with their peers, get support from their parents and teachers, and, in the process, bond with them.
Enhancing literacy academic excellence and fostering a reading culture boost learners' self-esteem, confidence, and interpersonal skills, complementing classroom activities. Through practical experiences aligned with classroom content, it supports holistic development, including aesthetic, character, spiritual, physical growth, and moral values. The Spelling Bee cultivates coordination, speech fluency, and extempore expression, enriching primary and secondary students' overall development.
