Steps towards independence of blind refugees from Ukraine

By BUTENKO VALENTYNA | Lider projekt

Dear friends!

The war broke into our house unexpectedly. Due to rocket attacks and the occupation of our territories, hundreds of blind Ukrainians found themselves far from their homes, from a well-established life, sometimes without friends and relatives.

A blind refugee in a foreign country without knowledge of the language, the surrounding space is not only a disaster for a person, but also a great burden for the country that gave him temporary protection. It is impossible to give each of them an interpreter, a social worker, a mobility trainer, an escort. This takes time and resources.
A team of Ukrainian specialists from the NGO "IUS" in partnership with the Resource and Information Center of the Kharkiv Center "Right of Choice" adapted the software of a push-button smartphone for the blind based on the budget shockproof and waterproof smartphone AGM M7.
This software product makes this smartphone as comfortable as possible for blind users with voice synthesizers in Ukrainian and English.
From February 23 to 27, our team, in partnership with the Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Germany (Augsburg), conducted a training "Modern mobile applications for blind users on a smartphone." 38 blind participants of the training installed mobile applications on their phones for 5 days and learned how to use them in practice.

Thanks to these programs, our participants will be able to use the navigator on their smartphones, help navigate in space, warn of danger, allow them to find the right transport, build a route, seek help with an interpreter, and even identify nearby people and objects.

We really need your help to improve the software and teach blind people how to use mobile phones.
