After the urgent animal relief was completed post Hurricane Dorian at the end of October 2019, we realized that there were many dogs roaming in Marsh Harbour and we had a few reports of litters as early as late October.
We knew we had to act right away! The challenge was we could not conduct our traditional MASH clinics where large volunteer teams of 10+ people come in for a weekend and we spay or neuter 100-200 dogs and cats, as there was no where for volunteers to stay.
So we got creative! We were gifted 2 military tents from Global Medics so we took one to Marsh Harbour Abaco. A kind Abaconian allowed us to use her property to set up our temporary clinic site. We had a generator and a temporary water supply.
We did a series of 5 1-day clinics starting November 13th and ending December 13th. We had one main Baark! representative from Nassau stationed in Abaco, several really awesome volunteers who live in Abaco (some year round and some who are from other countries volunteering post Dorian and came to help on their days off !!) and then Dr. Solomon, his vet tech, and several other volunteers would fly up for the day. Dr. Solomon and one other volunteer (usually his tech) would typically overnight as we could find accomodations for 2-3 volunteers. Most days, Solomon operated up to 9pm at night!
We spayed and neutered a total of 186 dogs and cats, mostly from Mainland Abaco and a few from surrounding islands.
This work we hope helps to keep the population of Marsh Harbour down following Hurricane Dorian. We are so grateful for your continued support.
Next weekend a team is going to Nicholls Town Andros so stay tuned for an update!
on behalf of the dogs and cats in The Bahamas we thank you very very much, Laura
