The "Space of Recovery" project by Light of Hope Charitable Foundation will hold a psychological retreat for 30 veterans and their family members in a safe natural setting in Ukraine. Participants will receive support from psychologists and take part in family activities and a separate children's program that reduces anxiety and improves family communication.
Thousands of veterans in Ukraine return from the front anxious, exhausted, and isolated - and this crisis affects the whole family, not just the veteran. Partners experience secondary stress, and children feel anxious about changes in their parents' behavior. Many communities lack accessible psychosocial services for military families, and stigma around long-term therapy discourages people from seeking help.
The "Space of Recovery" project holds a 1-2 day psychological retreat in nature for 30 veterans and their family members to reduce anxiety and restore family communication. Two psychologists lead individual and group sessions with adults, while a child psychologist works separately with children through art therapy and games. Families gain practical communication and self-regulation skills to use at home.
80% of participants will report improved emotional wellbeing, and 70% will report improved family interaction, thanks to self-regulation and communication skills gained during the "Space of Recovery" retreat. Families will lower their risk of further isolation, become part of a support community, and gain greater readiness to seek professional psychological help in the future.
