Through training, networking, community partnering and direct service Island Hospice Service will provide: Palliative care and support, primarily at home and also in hospital.
Many of the millions of children in Zimbabwe, who have been orphaned as a result of the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS, are sent to live with extended family. These adults who step in as guardians are increasingly overburdened and unable to cope as tradition expects. As a result of this lack of resources, bereaved children are not given the nurturing that they need. Island Hospice provides education and support to these guardians through home visits and guardian support groups.
Orphaned children are identified through Island Hospice and their guardians are contacted by hospice social workers. Home visits are made to identify specific needs of the child for whom they are caring, and support groups are run.
The goal is to foster a family environment for bereaved children that will optimally support their development.
