Thanks to support from donors like you, HEI/SBH has led southern Haiti’s healthcare response to August 2021’s devastating earthquake. Our mobile clinic services, which provide primary care for people whose closest health facilities were damaged or destroyed, have reached more than 100,000 people in earthquake-affected areas. SBH has also seen an increase in outpatient and emergency visits, reflecting an influx of people willing to travel hours for care because they lack access to it in their own communities. HEI/SBH is providing support and mentorship for local health facilities until they are back on their feet. With Build Health International and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, we are helping to rebuild the health center in Maniche, which was completely destroyed and served as the area’s main primary care clinic.
HEI/SBH has also launched a much-needed orthopedics program in the wake of the earthquake. We performed orthopedic surgeries on an emergency basis immediately following the disaster, and in November 2021 we launched an orthopedics outpatient clinic. The clinic has seen more than 1,300 patient visits, and we have performed 314 orthopedic surgical procedures since the earthquake. Patients receive not only surgical interventions but also rehabilitation, including physical and occupational therapy, psychosocial support, and follow-up care.
Thanks to generous support from the GlobalGiving community, HEI/SBH has been able to respond to the health care needs of earthquake-affected communities while continuing to provide the high-quality care that our patients expect at SBH.
