Summary

SOS Lemurs is a special initiative of SOS - Save Our Species, working to save lemurs and help the communities who depend on their survival. Only found on Madagascar, over 90% of lemur species are threatened with extinction due to slash-and-burn agriculture, illegal logging and hunting. Implementing projects aligned with the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group's Lemur Action Plan is our best chance to save them. It identifies 30 key sites and what to do. SOS lemurs is acting on that plan. Join us!

Challenge

Over 90% of Madagascar's lemur species are threatened with imminent extinction due to slash-and-burn agriculture, illegal logging and hunting.

Solution

Designed by the world's leading primate specialists, the Lemur Action Plan identifies 30 priority sites for conservation action together with recommended actions for site specific work to save Madagascar's lemurs from extinction while addressing the needs of communities who also depend on the species' long-term survival. SOS is acting on it.

Long-Term Impact

All SOS funded projects are chosen for their capacity to achieve long-term positive impacts for wildlife, habitats and the communities who depend on their survival. SOS Lemurs projects will ensure lemurs remain living icons of Madagascar - a valuable source of tourism dollars that those communities can benefit from by involving them in livelihood solutions that present tourism as a sustainable alternative to poaching and deforestation.
