Nearly 1,600 participants and over 1,300 volunteers and coaches invaded Newberg, Oregon in mid-July for Summer State Games 2013! The athletes competed in track & field, bocce, golf, and softball.
Each athlete has their own story of the strength and courage it took them to get there, but we’d like to tell you about one particularly inspiring relay team from Josephine County, THE PANTHERS! Last year The Panthers relay team consisting of Joe, Troy, Kris, and Barry ran their pants off, or to be more accurate, ran their shoes off! The race was neck and neck when relay anchor Barry, flew out of the exchange area pulling ahead of the other team. Just when it looked like The Panthers were going to win the race Barry, who was running so fast, blew out of his shoe and fell to the pavement losing a heartbreaker of a race. This year, after placing 1st in Regionals, The Panthers were ready to prove they have what it takes to win this year. They practiced hard and won the gold medal in their division! A big congratulations to The Panthers and all athletes that competed at Summer State Games 2013!!!
Stories like this wouldn't be possible without donors like you. Thank you for your continued support of Special Olympics Oregon.
