Throughout TECHO's trajectory in the country, we have significantly impacted various areas, improving the quality of life for many communities. To date, we have built nearly 6,000 homes in 10 different regions of the country, mobilizing around 160,000 volunteers. Additionally, we have distributed over 543 tons of food to community-led soup kitchens, providing crucial support in times of need. Through our projects, we have trained more than 1,100 community leaders, strengthening local capacities for sustainable development.
Our work with community-led soup kitchens has been varied, benefiting a large number of people. Our initiatives include food collection from food banks, the installation of water solutions, and the construction of community centers for the kitchens. For example, over the past year, we managed to collect more than 32t of food from food banks, benefiting a total of 67,226 people.
In 2023, one of our notable achievements was the construction of five community centers in various districts, benefiting up to 1,690 people. These constructions not only provide adequate physical space for community activities but also strengthen the social fabric and promote cohesion within communities.
In many settlements in Lima, families face significant challenges related to water supply and storage. Depending on water trucks, these communities do not have consistent access to water in optimal conditions. This problem also affects the community-led soup kitchens, which rely on clean water to prepare food safely.
To address these challenges, we are implementing basic water solutions in community-led soup kitchens. These installations include a metal water tower and a 1,100-liter tank with a filter, ensuring a supply of clean and safe water. This not only reduces the risks of waterborne diseases but also ensures that community-led soup kitchens can operate efficiently and safely.
Additionally, we are installing water solutions with handwashing stations in community centers and private, semi-private, and public spaces. These installations allow for proper water storage and promote essential hygiene practices. Our goal is to reduce vulnerability to waterborne diseases and improve health indicators by training families and communities in the management and efficient use of clean water.
In 2023, we installed a total of 67 water solutions, directly benefiting 5,360 people. So far in 2024, we have built three water solutions with handwashing stations in community-led soup kitchens in San Juan de Lurigancho, continuing our commitment to improving living conditions in the most vulnerable communities.
In conclusion, TECHO Perú has significantly impacted the quality of life in the country's most vulnerable communities. Through the construction of community centers, food distribution, and the implementation of water solutions, we have mobilized thousands of volunteers and benefited tens of thousands of people, with special emphasis on ODS 2 zero hunger.
Our commitment to community development and the training of local leaders remains a priority, ensuring sustainable and lasting progress. We will continue to work to address the challenges faced by our communities and build a more equitable and just future for all. Furthermore, we have many pending projects for 2024, which we will report on later, reaffirming our commitment to the well-being and development of communities in Peru.
