Solar Electricity for an African School
By Peter Mazula | Technical Manager
On July 28th 2016, Tanzsolar was informed by Tegeruka Secondary School head master that the school's solar system has stopped operating. After visiting the school and testing the solar system we became aware that the batteries had failed and could no longer support the school's solar system. The decission was then made by Tanzsolar and the school board to investigate the cost needed to replace the batteries. Tanzsolar found a battery supplier who would sell the needed batteries at 550$. The transportation cost plus a small amount to pay for installation of the new batteries came to 50$ making the total cost for new batteires, transportation and installation be 600$.
After a fund raising effort that was started by Tanzsolar and the Tegeruka School board, we are happy to announce that the necessary amount was raised and completed on August 30th 2016. We are now in the process of acquiring the batteries and plan to install them by the10th September 2016. The science teacher at the school who is responsible for operation and maintenance of the solar system will assist Tanzsolar with the installation of the new batteries.
This joint fund raising effort has shown that it will be possible to maintain and keep the school solar system working well into the future. We again would like to thank all of our supporters who have helped to make this project possible

On 18th April 2016, Tanzsolar LTD was able to present Niwa portable solar lights to the top girls students in Form four at Tegeruka Secondary School. This award to the girls students is of great help due to the fact that they don’t have electricity or solar lighting at their homes to use for studying. Most of the boys students are able to attend study session after dark at Tegeruka Secondary School by using school’s Solar lighting system. Unfortunately most of the girls students aren’t able to attend the study sessions after dark due to long walking distances and sometimes unsafe conditions at night.
In the future Tanzsolar’s hope is to provide more portable lights for girls students so that they will be able to do their studying at home after dark. The gifts of the lights were greatly appreciated by both the young girls who earned the lights by finishing at the top of their classes and the schools faculty. A request was made by the school’s headmaster to Tanzsolar for continuing to provide portable solar lights to girls students whenever possible. Our plan is to continue to support the school solar lighting system until the end of 2016.
Tanzsolar LTD has now distributed LED solar lighting systems with phone charging capability to 24 dispensaries and health centers in the Mara Region. This work has been recognized by the Mara Region Commissioner. A letter of Commendation and thanks has been presented to Tanzsolar by the Regional Government. Tanzsolar LTD sends out a big thank you to all our supporters who have helped to make our efforts in Mara Region Possible. We are continuing to provide these solar lighting systems to dispensaries and health centers who need them until all have solar lighting systems, thank you again. Pictures from the school and young girls acceptance of the lights are attached.

Solar Electrification for an African School
By Justin Ibrahim | Project Director
A recent meeting was held with school leaders, at this meeting Tanzsolar was informed that the school solar system is functioning well with the required maintenance being done. Tanzsolar is still in the process of getting additional quotes for low power printers and a computer that will be a great help for the school's administration office along with more LED lights . This equipment must be able to run on the present solar system without causing any problems. The Tanzsolar compatition to provide NIWA portable lights to the top two girls students in form four is almost completed and the lights will be presented to the students on the 11th April 2016. The plan is to complete the school project and hand it over to the school board by the end of the year 2016. We are in the process now of providing solar lights systems with phone charging to Rorya district health centers and dispensaries in mara Region and we will soon be expanding the project to the remaining districts in Mara Region. Thanks again to all who have provided some assistance and support to Tanzsolar's projects in Mara and the Coastal Region of Tanzania.
