Imagine a child sitting in a classroom after sunset, trying to read a textbook in darkness or under a weak, unreliable light. Imagine a teacher preparing lessons without electricity, a school unable to use computers because there is no dependable power, and children returning home without enough light to complete their homework. For many vulnerable children in rural Uganda, limited access to reliable electricity remains a major barrier to effective learning. Solar Schools Uganda:
Education does not stop when the sun goes down. However, in many underserved communities, children and teachers face significant challenges when electricity is unavailable or unreliable. Students may have little opportunity to study in the evening, while schools may be unable to provide adequate lighting in classrooms, libraries, dormitories, staff rooms and other learning spaces. Good Cause Foundation Uganda will work with selected underserved schools to introduce practical solar-energy solutions based on each school's needs. The project will support: Solar lighting for classrooms Solar lighting for libraries and study spaces Solar lighting for school dormitories where appropriate Solar systems for teachers' preparation and administrative spaces Solar charging points for essential educational devices Solar-powered support for computers and digital learning equipment
With sufficient funding, Solar Schools Uganda will help create learning environments where children can study beyond daylight hours and schools can make better use of educational technology. We expect the project to contribute to: More reliable lighting in participating schools Increased opportunities for evening study Better conditions for teachers to prepare lessons Improved access to digital learning where equipment is available Safer and more productive school environments
