Solar powered computer education centre

In its early days, the Adharshila School had limited classroom space and the barest minimum infrastructure. However, we have gone from strength to strength in the past few years, with support from generous donors and the continuous efforts of a fantastic team of dedicated field based workers. Over the years, our needs have grown, and our dreams for the children in the school have become bigger. We moved from temporary structures to a permanent school building and a well-equipped campus a decade ago. We got access to high speed internet connectivity with our own dedicated internet tower two years ago. Today, we are dreaming even bigger dreams, in which the children at Adharshila will have the world of learning at their fingertips. And your support is making that possible!

Our young students are highly fascinated by the world of computers and the Internet, and have been hungry for high speed internet access on demand, so that they can self-pace their learning and open themselves to the infinite possibilities of the world of the Internet. Their dreams are important to us, but one of the major constraints in setting up a computer centre was the irregular supply of electricity in the region. It is with this in mind that we proposed the establishment of a solar powered computer centre at our campus in mid-2016. We are happy to report that this dream has come true today, and Adharshila has established a 5KW solar powered unit with the generous support of all our donors on GlobalGiving, and the technical and financial support of the excellent folks at Sharika Enterprises. This week, we have finally received a batch of new desktop computers, and the steps required for setting up the solar-powered computer centre have been completed!

“I’m thankful to all those who have contributed for this computer centre…I wish I could meet all those people and thank them personally”, says Rammurthi, a class 10 student of Adharshila.

Shivam from class 8 tells us: “We’ll be able to study better…there are so many things about which we used to read in books, now we’ll be able to see them”. He adds “Computers will help us to develop better understanding of subjects like science.”

Durgesh, a young student at Adharshila, was overjoyed when he saw the brand new computers recently acquired by the school. He said, “Till now the only missing thing in Adharshila was a computer centre. Now that we have one, learning would become even more exciting”

Kedar, our Satellite School Coordinator, feels a great sense of achievement with the setting up of this computer centre. In his words, “Youth in this area used to face great difficulty in looking and applying for jobs and but now having access to computers and internet would ease the process”.

With the setting up of this centre, we have added another milestone to our journey.  Today we have 15 computers at the centre, which will be used by children on a sharing basis. We hope to raise more funds to reach our target of a 30-computer room with full solar power back-up and networked machines hooked to the worldwide web. And we’re banking on you to make this happen with your own support and that of your friends and family.
