As the Mau issue continues to be the hottest environment story in Kenya, young Kenyan sportsmen and women in Langata Consituency are playing a very large part in improving their environment as they train and compete. Sadili Oval’s Sports for Life Programme has received a bronze award at the Total Eco-Challenge ceremonies, making it the only community sports initiative in the country to be rewarded for successfully combining sports and environmental concerns.

Dubbed the Trees for Peace campaign, this activity runs hand in hand with the Langata Youth Soccer League, an entertaining series that this year attracted 283 teams of boys and girls aged between 8 and 16 years, from around the constituency. Through successful partnership with Globalgiving, UNEP Office for Africa and Safaricom, 4600 children planted 14,678 trees, this year, an increase from 7,900 planted in 2008. Trees have been planted in various sites, including the Southern bypass, within Kibera and along the Nairobi River.

Youth who participated in this activity are also the first to receive solar lamps through our project #1890, as the program develops, as part of our campaign to commit to a Green Environment.
