School's (Almost) Out for Summer!

By Katherine Kolios | Executive Director

A Year of Concentrated Effort Pays off for Exams!
A Year of Concentrated Effort Pays off for Exams!

What a year: the French withdrew from Niger, a key anti-migration bill was overturned - upending the flow of people and goods through Agadez, and the U.S. is in the process of shutting down their Army bases in Agadez and across Niger.

Amidst the national and regional upheaval, the 92 girls at the ALC have stayed focused on the things within their control. They studied hard at middle school during the day and worked closely with their after-school teachers and peer tutors in the afternoons and evenings.

The girls have spent the last 9 months benefitting from daily after-school classes and study sessions focused on the core competencies of French, math, English, and science - including physics and chemistry. French is particularly critical; it's a 2nd or 3rd language for girls from small, rural communities but it's also the language in which all their other classes are taught. They need to apply themselves now because French is the language of and doorway to higher education, government, and public facilities like health clinics and hospitals.

As the girls gear up for year-end exams, this year of studying will serve them well. We wish them bon courage on their exams and we know they and their families are looking forward to being re-united during their long-awaited summer vacation.

In the meantime, RAIN's staff is looking ahead to their own summer plans, preparing for next year (via field trips to recruit new students for 2024-2025) and beyond (we're raising funds to implement the exciting ALC expansion plans...).
