Solar power is crucial for our South African elephant orphanage due to Eskom's frequent and unpredictable outages. It provides a stable, cost-effective, and sustainable solution to support essential functions and care for our elephants' well-being.
The challenge is that South Africa experiences frequent load-shedding and power problems, leading to an unreliable and costly national power supply from Eskom. As the country's first and only dedicated elephant orphanage, caring for 16 elephants, we face the difficulty of managing power disruptions while providing consistent animal care.
Transitioning to solar energy is vital for HERD to handle South Africa's frequent power outages. Solar power provides a stable, independent energy source, ensuring continuous power and lighting during load-shedding. This reduces costs and disruptions from the national grid while supporting essential operations like feeding, care, security, communication, and crisis management. Adopting solar energy enhances HERD's resilience and operational efficiency, ensuring consistent care for the elephants.
