On a very rainy afternoon in September we were fortuned enough to have more than 60 volunteers on our hand in one day. We decided to treat an entire neighbourhood on 20 diggerent projects. We went to homes of people who've been through a difficult situation, we went to a home where people with dissabilities live and of course we went to an elderly home!
Because of the weather report we changed our plans of having a nice walk outside, to serving drinks and treats. There is this Dutch treat which we call: 'Poffertjes'. These are like small pancakes of about 2-3 cm. For the elderly it's most of the time a nice remembrance to when they were little. Or perhaps, when they treated their own children or grandchildren to this traditional meal.
You can imagine the joy they experienced when all these volunteers(this group had approximately 10 adults) came in with their hot drinks and poffertjes!
Aside from the joy of the elderly, it was beautiful to watch the adults enjoy their time as a volunteer.
Even though most of the 60+ people had once or twice got their pants thouroughly wet of all the rain that day, it was a more than satisfying day, for both the elderly and the volunteers.
