Update

By Mastora Bakhiet | Project Leader

Dear friends,

On behalf of Darfur Women Network (DWN), I would like to express my gratitude for your generous donation of $160.00. I am excited that our partnership with GlobalGiving is unique, helpful and very beneficial. The GlobalGiving provides us with great services such as training, connection, referrals, and all the means to help us to raise fund to implement our project in order to achieve our goals.

I believe that Soap Making Project is essential for the refugees in the camp because the United Nations (UN) stopped distribution of the soap a couple months prior to my visitation to the camp on July 2014. I flew via UN’s Helicopter at 6 am from N’djamena to Abashi, then, after five hours; I took another Helicopter to Hiriba, then, I took a car to the camp. I arrived to the camp at 7 pm after sun set. Walking out of the Security station after I finished the registration before inter to the camp. I sensed the suffering of the people.  The entire camp was so quiet and dark, there was no light anywhere in the area that was inhabitant by 29,000 people.

The coming day, I walked in and around the camp, I saw refugee childrren playing, wearing torn, dirty clothes on their weak slim body. They have to play, but they have no toys. Some are lucky to find some local empty cans to make toys from the cans or play with the sand despite lack of soap for personal hygiene.

I am so worried about the kids and their families who have no source of income ,but they have enough numbers of trained individuals who are now waiting us to provide them with soap making ingredients and tools to enable women to provide their community with regular soap for reasonable price. This project aims to empower women by creating income and gives refugees with access to hygiene tools.

The materials our clients’ need to start making soap immediately are:

  •  Soap Molds -  a traditional wooden soap mold
  •  Soap Drying Trays
  • Soap Maker Scales
  •  Soap Mixing Tools (Use a container made out of heat resistant material only when making soap)
  • ,Safety Equipment( rubber gloves and goggles for protection from the hazardous chemicals).
  • Wooden or silicone utensils - for mixing my soap solutions.
  • Soap Cutter ( Manual) - a soap cutter is used to cut the soap into bars.

I would like you to know that with your support we will  have soap making supplies and equipment ready for the soap making group( Darfur refugee women), then, they will get their work place organized and start producing soap immediately. Are you ready to make it happen!
