Recycle Utah's SnowSport Recycle Collection is the first program of its kind in Utah. It is a social responsibility to divert equipment from the landfill so toxic materials don't leach into our water stream. We will now be charged a cost per pound of equipment from the recycling facility. The costs are attributed to expensive material separation process. For Recycle Utah to keep the SnowSports Recycling Program running, we need individuals, businesses, suppliers and manufactures support.
Our town has a unique waste stream, snowsport equipment. This equipment includes skis, poles, bindings, goggles, helmets, snowboards. The materials that makes up this equipment can be toxic and dangerous when broken down in a landfill. The mixed materials make it difficult to degrade, hence there long landfill life. To protect our water stream from toxic materials leaching into it, we must recycle. It costs us 50 cents per lb of equipment to recycle. We need support to continue the program.
Since it is expensive to recycle this equipment due to separating materials, SIA (SnowSports Industries America) is now charging us a fee per lb. By supporting this program, it not only helps build awareness about the consequences of throwing away skis but also will allow us to continue to recycle. By diverting snowsport equipment, it will save our landfills, water steam, and also natural resources that are being use to manufacture new equipment.
The SnowSport Industry is hard on the environment and with a community that revolves around the outdoors, it is time to take responsibility. Global climate change is a huge threat to our winters. By recycling our equipment we reduce environmental impact, conserve natural resources, and initiate sustainable design within the industry. This is a step to taking action towards climate change.
