Overview

From June to September 2026, Japan Heart's domestic program, the Smile Smile Project (SSP), continued supporting children with pediatric cancer and their families through personalized outings tailored to each family's wishes, held across Japan. During this period, children and families enjoyed a beach adventure in Okinawa, Disney Resort visits, a long-awaited school trip, a corporate-sponsored event at Huis Ten Bosch, and a journey by airplane — each experience shaped around the child's condition and hopes.

Key Updates & Achievements

"Swimming with Sea Turtles in the Okinawan Sea" (June 28, 2026)

SSP supported a family whose child had recently completed a stretch of inpatient treatment, fulfilling their long-held wish to go snorkeling in the sea of Okinawa. In a remarkable moment, a sea turtle approached the family's boat on its own, and everyone gathered to swim alongside it.

Achievement: The trip turned a dream born during long months of treatment into reality, creating an unforgettable summer memory for the family.

"Sara-chan's First Ride!" (July 5, 2026)

SSP supported a second trip for a family it had previously assisted, this time to Tokyo Disneyland. Unlike the family's earlier visit, when physical concerns had ruled out thrill rides, this time the child was able to try attractions that had once felt out of reach, resulting in a day full of smiles.

Achievement: Seeing the child thriving after completing treatment, the trip gave the whole family — including siblings — a chance to enjoy themselves fully together.

"A Journey Through Historic Sites and Vibrant Cities: Kocchan's School Trip" (July 17, 2026)

SSP supported a trip to Kyoto and Osaka for a student who had been unable to join their school trip the previous year due to hospitalization. With cooperation from hospital staff, a temporary discharge was arranged, allowing the family to visit sites including Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Universal Studios Japan.

Achievement: Even while continuing treatment, the trip gave the family a chance to reclaim an important shared memory from school life.

"Into the World of Fantasy Springs with Karin-chan" (August 2, 2026)

SSP supported a three-day, two-night Disney trip for Karin-chan and her family, following a new cancer diagnosis that had placed significant strain on her physical and emotional wellbeing. Despite the side effects of treatment, she looked forward to the trip and pushed through each step to make it possible.

Achievement: Even during an especially difficult phase of treatment, the trip brought moments of laughter and connection to the family, while also revealing Karin-chan's caring nature toward those around her.

"Huis Ten Bosch Invitational Event" (August 16, 2026)

With sponsorship from Shin Nihon Seiyaku Co., Ltd., SSP held an invitational event for families in the Kyushu region. One child, previously unable to ride certain attractions due to treatment-related hair loss, was able to remove her hat and enjoy the rides this time — a visible sign of recovery. This event marked the 10th anniversary of the company's sponsorship, which has supported a total of 55 families and 239 participants from the Kyushu region over the past decade.

Achievement: This long-standing corporate partnership has continued to bring joyful memories to many families, and a certificate of appreciation was presented to mark the milestone.

"Senkun's Midsummer Adventure: Flying to See Mickey!" (September 6, 2026)

With the possibility that IV treatment might be needed during the trip, SSP arranged a one-night, two-day Disney trip accompanied by medical staff. The journey became a true adventure, involving the child's first-ever flight along with train and shinkansen rides.

Achievement: Even with medical needs to manage, the trip safely delivered a special shared experience for the child and their sibling, making meaningful family time possible.
