Summary

Healing Venezuela's Food Security project in Guaraunos, a rural village in Venezuela, has significantly enhanced the health of 100 vulnerable children. The success is also due to proactive community engagement. We're now fundraising to expand our impact beyond humanitarian aid. By introducing a backyard poultry initiative, a model that's seen great success in other countries, we aim to promote sustainable development through and for the village of Guaraunos to be economically independent.

Challenge

The most recent FAO report revealed that Venezuela is the second most undernourished country in the Americas after Haiti. 76.6% of Venezuelans live on less than $1.90 a day, and rural areas are particularly affected by declining living standards, high inflation, and scarcity of food, medicines and fuel. Families in remote regions often find themselves overlooked by mainstream humanitarian initiatives as malnutrition in children has reached alarming levels, and job opportunities are very limited.

Solution

After running a successful food programme for four years in Guaraunos, a village in Venezuela, we are now focusing on sustainable backyard poultry. Examples from other countries show this as a solution to enhance living standards and increase financial independence. Chickens are a rich protein source, are low-maintenance, and can reduce food waste. Small Steps for a Better Future will provide beneficiaries with a poultry farm starting package with 25 chicks, food, medicines and training.

Long-Term Impact

The aim is to support sustainability by providing small farmers with the basic tools to be financially independent and end the cycle of poverty in Guaraunos village. As in other countries, beneficiaries will be able to diversify their revenue streams, potentially branching into ventures like grocery stores. Our poultry farming initiative is envisioned not as an end but as a launchpad for sustained financial stability and, over time, to end their dependency on Healing Venezuela.
