As a daughter of a street food vendor, Kirti, 15, a 10th grade student at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya (Girls School) at Sangam Vihar, Delhi. Living below poverty line and with two younger siblings at home, Kirti is also forced to live a restricted life due to her family's patriarchy rule. She wanted to learn Tae Kwon Do but the sport-outfit didn't go well with the orthodox values. Morally she was down. Fortunately, she signed up for Sukarya's Gender Equality Program in her school which helped her to understand the importance of gender equality, girl’s rights, right to select her own career etc. The series of training sessions helped in clearing her doubts and also provided encouragement to pursue her dreams of becoming a martial arts specialist. In the process, she Came first winning the title at the National Open Competition of Tae Kwon Do held at Firozabad (U.P). She has not only worked on herself but is also now active and vocal within her family and community. She appreciates the help and knowledge she gained from the Gender Equality Program and we are also happy to see her grow and succeed.
