Story of Zuham
Zuham, a student of 8th standard, lives in a family of six, including her two brothers and her sister. Zuham was part of the gender equality program of Sukarya, where she learned many things, including her rights and ways to deal with the challenges that life throws one way. The program made Zuham aware that this is a story where her learnings helped her become a catalyst of change. Zuham came in contact with a girl in her neighborhood who was severely depressed and had low self-esteem just because she was ridiculed for her dark complexion. Zuham realized that the girl felt alienated not just in the Community but in her home as well, where even her mother used to discriminate against her just because of the dark complexion of her skin. The girl used to stay alone, had no friends, and would not attend any functions or participate in festivities. It was very saddening. Zuham decided to help her friend, and she discussed her concerns with the team of Sukarya. Our team guided Zuham, so Zuham intervened on behalf of the girl in her family. She talked to her parents and made them realize their faults. She counseled her friend and told her that her skills and achievements matter her skin color. She helped raise her self-esteem and made her realize her self-worth. Zuham's friend is now on a better path. This experience boosted Zuham's confidence and increased her faith in her training. She actively participates in community events, helping others and raising concerns about the injustices in her Community. She thanks Sukarya for helping her become a valuable and productive member of society. We wish her the best of luck in all future endeavors.
