Empowering and Protecting Slum Girls
Sarfana: A Success Story
Sarfana,13, lives with her mother and six siblings in a sub-urban slum in Gurgaon. At a very young age, her father had left for work and never came back. Now, Sarfana’s mother is the sole bread winner of the family and is responsible for the wellbeing of all of her seven children. The ones that aren’t as young are simply uneducated and too unskilled to get employed, and depend upon pan-handling for a living.
Sarfana has been attending the training sessions of ARSH and FLE almost for five to six months now. Living in an insecure environment where young women face the problems of violence & abuses almost every day. Under both the programs, Sarfana learns about the various ways in which these attacks are disguised and how they are to be recognized and avoided. She has also learned about cleanliness and hygiene, and practices the same daily.
Sarfana wishes to be an empowered and independent woman when she grows up. ARSH AND FLE enable her to take the necessary steps that will assist her in reaching her goals, while protecting herself and her family. From the very first day when she started attending the sessions, she has been a curious learner and has repeatedly participated in general discussions while clarifying doubts. Being more knowledgeable on ARSH and FLE, Sarfana even reaches out to other young adults in her neighbourhood about the benefits of maintaining good personal hygiene and how to take care of oneself in an open and insecure environment.
