The slow loris (Nycticebus spp.) Is the only nocturnal primate that is poisonous. There are nine species of slow loris (genus Nycticebus) in the world and seven of them are found in Indonesia, namely Nycticebus javanicus in Java, N. hilleri, N.bancanus, N. coucang in Sumatra and N. borneanus, N. kayan, N menagensis in Kalimantan. Three of them, namely N. coucang, N. menagensis and N. javanicus are protected in the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 106 of 2018 concerning Protected Plant and Animal Types.
According to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) all species of these slow lorises are experiencing a decline in population due to habitat loss, use of slow lorises as medicine and the high illegal trade in slow lorises both locally and nationally.
Slow lorises are traded online and offline. Social media such as Instagram ,Facebook and Whatsapp are platforms that are often used for online trading.
The use of slow lorises as photo props and displaying them on social media is also one of the things that supports traders to continue working on stock for this animal.
Meanwhile, offline trading still takes place in the animal market. Some examples of animal markets in Java and Sumatra that have traded these protected animals are Pramuka Market, Barito Market and Jatinegara Market in Jakarta, Sukahaji Market in Bandung, Rose Market in Garut and the animal market on Jalan Bintang Medan, Siantar and the animal market. other birds in Sumatra.
In 2012, based on research by V. Nijman, the Javan slow loris trade declined in the market. However, there has been a fourfold increase in the Sumatran slow loris trade.
As poisonous primates, traders often cut the lower teeth of the slow loris to avoid its poisonous bite or to avoid biting each other during transportation. In fact, cutting the lower teeth of the slow loris is very influential in the future.
Those who are still alive can no longer be released because they cannot find their favorite food, namely tree sap. In addition they cannot do grooming or social grooming which requires their lower teeth to clean themselves.
