At Saffron Kitchen Project we offer free culinary vocational training in partnership with IEK Delta, a Greek educational center, for refugees. The training provides a combination of culinary and soft skills, including teamwork and time management. Recognised by the Greek Ministry of Education, each graduate receives an accredited certificate. As well as the training students obtain employability workshop, support writing their CVs and are connected to jobs within the Greek hospitality industry
In 2022, unemployment in Greece was at 11.4%, a number that is predicted to rise to an average of 12.4% in 2023. This is highly prevalent in the refugee community, causing oftentimes people to fall into black market work that can be unsafe and exploitative. At the same time, a critical part of Greece's GDP comes from the tourism and hospitality sectors, where hope can be found in-part thanks to the post-COVID boom they continue to enjoy.
By offering culinary training through a Greek company our students receive a truly invaluable look into working in a Greek kitchen and the hospitality industry. They are taught traditional European skills and recipes that make it easier to enter the job market and gives more opportunities in finding work within the local community. The accredited certificate is recognised throughout Greece and is instrumental to their CVs.
The long-term impact of our training is that it will lead to a sustainable livelihood. The hospitality industry being one of the largest in Greece can absorb many people and there is always jobs available. In entering the local job market students will learn the language, integrate more into the society and most importantly face job and life security. It will ensure no food insecurity and ultimately give a vital opportunity to those who need it most.
