The report provides an overview of the challenges and circumstances that have led to the unfortunate cancellation of the Skilling the Women project in the year 2023. Our project which aims at empowering single women from Katanga slum through skills development in tailoring faced insurmountable in the form of lack of funding. Equipping women with practical sewing skills, the project sought to promote economic independence, self-sufficiency, and empowerment. In previous years the success of the tailoring class established a pivotal avenue for enhancing the social economic prospects of participating for women
Regrettably, the primary reason for the project not taking place this year has been a lack of available funding. The project relies on financial resources to cover various aspects, including Machine maintenance, training materials, lunch for the women, baby seater, trainers’ remuneration, and logistics. Despite our efforts to reach out to secure funding through donations and grants, we encountered a funding shortfall that made it impossible to execute the project as planned
Impact of a funding shortfall
The inability to secure the necessary funding for the tailoring class has far-reached consequences, first, it denies single mothers in our community who had high hopes for their lives to be changed an opportunity to gain tailoring skills that could have led to meaningful employment entrepreneurship and improved livelihoods, it for sure has deprived women a safe space for learning, and growth
As an organization we have been undoubtedly disappointed in our financial state this year, however, our commitment to the women in the Katanga slum remains steadfast. We are actively exploring alternative funding avenues and engaging with potential partners who share our vision. Our goal is to secure the necessary resources to resume the Skilling the Women project in the year 2024. For us to be able to operate effectively we need consistent backing from individuals, organizations, and institutions to drive positive change come 2024. Please consider sharing our links with your families and friends and networks of institutions that you think can be of great help in supporting this life-changing initiative.
