Colorado State University Engineers without Borders volunteers are constructing the Indigenous Wisdom Center at Slim Buttes on the Pine Ridge Reservation. After years of extremely rough conditions for the home-construction volunteers, as well as the theft of our entire cache of materials and tools a couple of years ago (including a car, generators, and field kitchen), the Center will be a crucial, secure staging area, moving forward.
With the nearest grocery store an hour's drive away, the summer garden and a year-round walipini (built last summer) provide fresh produce to liven up canned and dried food staples. The walipini, which is heated with passive geothermal energy since it's half below ground level, is also a replicable demonstration project for food security on the rez.
