Thank you for your continued support of SIMA! We’re excited to share our most recent updates with you.
SIMA AWARDS UPDATES:
On February 9, 2017 we announced the official winners of the 5th annual International SIMA Awards! Chosen from 301 submissions from 100 countries, the SIMA 2017 winners represent the best of global impact filmmaking.
From an unprecedented look into the lives at the center of the reproductive health care debate in the U.S. with Best Feature Documentary Winner Jackson, to the visually seductive and equally magical environmental exposé Samuel in The Clouds (Best Cinematography), these films unapologetically invite viewers to reexamine the state of our world and their own potential to change it.
“Amidst a global fight for human rights, equality and journalistic integrity, our winners bring us face to face with some of the most eye-opening, unique and urgent perspectives, raising the bar for content creators everywhere. We could not be more proud and in awe of the courageous filmmakers and creative activists we get to support this year.” - Daniela Kon, SIMA Founder and Executive Director

More great news– as the SIMA Awards season comes to a close, we are very excited to announce that over 30 new impact films will be joining SIMA Classroom by March 15! From the challenges of a young girl supporting her family in the harsh streets of Ghana’s capital (KAYAYO, The Living Shopping Baskets, winner of Best Documentary & Best Cinematography in the Documentary Short category); to tales of inspirational applications of technology (Walking 2.0, winner of the Jury Prize for Innovation); to narratives of environmental conservation like The Super Salmon located in Alaska’s Susitna River - these stories of activism, compassion and resilience span 19 countries and bring students up close and personal with the social justice warriors shaping their futures.
SIMAX & TRAVELING SERIES UPDATES:
More exciting news from February - we hosted our 3rd annual SIMA Cambodia grassroots film festival in Phnom Penh. From youth drug abuse in Cambodia with SIMA 2016 winner Break In, to cultural infanticide in the Omo Valley of Ethiopia with our 2016 Ethos Jury Prize Winner Omo Child: The River and the Bush, this year’s festival took audiences on a visual journey around the globe.
“SIMA proves how engaging documentaries can be.” - Nico Mesterharm, SIMA Cambodia Ambassador
Before this, in December we closed our year here in Los Angeles with a special screening of our SIMA 2015 Lens to Action Jury Prize Winner Vessel in response to the imminent threat of female reproductive rights here in the US. The screening and our open discussion lead by Juana Rosa Cavero, Executive Director at California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom, helped facilitate a productive dialogue around the resources that are under attack and the organizations that are fighting to keep them.
“I came away from this screening inspired and unapologetic for wanting to stand up for one's beliefs. Thank you for having the strength to share something so poignant and impactful.” - Audience Member
In the weeks ahead, we will busy growing support to onboard the 61 schools currently awaiting sponsored access for SIMA Classroom. We are also looking forward to launching a new digital film club that will bring together SIMA audiences from across the globe. Stay tuned for more about this by subscribing to our newsletter here.
We look forward to providing you with more stories and updates from the forefront of social impact filmmaking and education.
Thank you for your invaluable contributions to educating, activating, and inspiring the next generation of leaders and changemakers.
With warmth and gratitude from all of us at SIMA.
