The beginning of 2017 has been fast paced and exciting as the Light School's new Sustainability Projects have gained momentum! Thanks to our generous donors and local support, the JSS3 students are now spending their afternoons learning how to sew on 5 new manual sewing machines with beautiful fabric donated by an ethical fashion label here in Lagos, Kinabuti. This new life skills course not only provides the students an opportunity to explore their creative instincts, it is also practical because it opens the door to a future career in the fashion and garment industry.
In such a short time the students have blossomed. During our last trip to The Light School it warmed our hearts to see the pride in their faces as they showed off their creations to the IBSF Board of Directors and volunteers. In the first few months of classes Mary, their energetic and extremely passionate Sewing teacher, has been teaching them the basics; thread/pins/needles, how to organize sewing supplies, types of sewing machines, the importance of maintenance, types of fabric to match the garment, and patterns. Their first project was to make a simple tote bag with a fun pattern on the front and it's understatement to say how impressed we were! See pictures below!
Starting in March the curriculum consists of hand sewing (hemming, buttons, decorative details), how to sew specialty fabrics such as denim, lace, satin, and velvet. The projects they will work on are: a small cash purse with zipper, a tote bag with elastic and gathering, they will learn to hem a pair of pants and create a shirt pattern.
We hope you are all as thrilled as we are that it's possible to positively impact a village such as Ishahayi Beach through educational projects like the new Sewing Project! Will will continue to share updates and photos as the project progresses and we thank you for all your support and encouragement!
Sincerely,
IBSF Board of Directors
