DAWN's Skills Training for Women

By Carmelita G. Nuqui | Executive Director

Skills Training on Handloom Weaving
Skills Training on Handloom Weaving

The Development Action for Women Network (DAWN) provided Skills Training on sewing and handloom weaving for women migrant returnees and members of their families from April to June 2024.

Ms. Josefa L. Garlitos, Handloom Weaving Trainer, taught the women on how to create handwoven coasters and placemats. Eventually, they also learned to create table runners. Ms. Mary Joy Barcelona, Sewing Trainer, trained them on sewing conference bags, hallow bags and drum pouches. These skills provided the women with opportunities for alternative livelihood and channels for creativity and therapy.

Ms. Crezol Mar L. Navarro, RSW, DAWN Social Services Program Coordinator, provided psychosocial sessions through group work activities and therapeutic workshops alongside skills trainings.

This holistic approach to reintegration empowers women migrant returnees, survivors of gender-based violence and trafficking and members of their families; transforming them from victims to survivors to advocates of their own issues and concerns.
