Over the past few months, our Recycling Art Studio has been taking important steps forward. After spending much of the year improving our facilities and recycling capacity, we're now focusing on something equally important: making sure our community can benefit from and participate in everything we've built.
Making recycling easier for everyone
One thing we've learned is that people want to recycle, but they need clear information about when, where, and how to do it.
After receiving requests from households and businesses for specific drop-off times, we recently introduced dedicated plastic and styrofoam collection and swapping hours every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
We've also been working on improving how we communicate with our community. One example is our new "Sock Method," a simple three-step guide explaining how to clean and prepare plastic before bringing it to the studio.
These changes were only introduced last week, so it's too early to measure their impact. But we're happy to be responding to what people have been asking for and making recycling easier to fit into everyday life.
Keeping our machines running and our studio ready
Our recycling machines work hard, and maintaining them has always been one of our biggest challenges.
Having Jay, our new in-house mechanic, responsible for repairs and maintenance is making a real difference. Instead of depending entirely on outside technicians, we now have someone who can regularly look after our equipment and help keep production moving.
Combined with the improvements we've made to our washing and processing facilities, this means our studio is better prepared to receive and process more recyclable materials.
Our next challenge is to make sure more people know about these services and use them.
Helping 10 local businesses become more sustainable
We've also launched a new Sustainability Program in Burgos, supported by Action Against Hunger Philippines.
Through this program, we're working with 10 local businesses to help them introduce more environmentally friendly practices into their daily operations.
The Recycling Art Studio plays an important role, particularly in waste segregation, plastic collection, and our Recycle & Swap program.
By helping businesses understand how to separate and prepare their waste, we're creating more opportunities for recyclable materials to be recovered rather than discarded.
It's also a wonderful example of how our different Nature Kids of Siargao projects can work together toward a common goal.
A new product inspired by our community
One development we're particularly happy to share is something completely new!
We recently reached out to nearly 50 customers and community partners to ask what plastic products they find difficult to source in good quality here on Siargao.
One answer kept coming up: flower pots.
Many people shared their frustration with pots that crack and break after being exposed to our island's strong sun and heavy rain.
So we decided to explore whether we could make something better using the plastic we collect.
Our team is now in the final stages of perfecting a new flower pot made from upcycled HDPE plastic. We're working toward creating an extremely durable, long-lasting product suitable for Siargao's tropical climate.
We hope to launch these pots soon for local households, resorts, restaurants, and other businesses.
For us, this is what recycling should be about: listening to the community, identifying real needs, and turning discarded materials into useful products that people actually want.
What's next?
Our focus for the coming months is to strengthen community participation, support our new business partners, keep improving production, and bring our recycled flower pots to market.
There are still challenges ahead. Running recycling machinery, developing new products, and encouraging proper waste segregation all take time, resources, and patience.
But we're moving forward, one improvement at a time.
To everyone supporting our Recycling Art Studio through GlobalGiving: thank you. Your contributions help us maintain our equipment, support our team, develop new solutions, and keep recycling services available to our community.
Together, we're working toward an island where plastic waste is no longer simply thrown away, but given a second life.
With gratitude from all of us at Nature Kids of Siargao!
