Establish Tailoring Center; Empower Ugandan Women

by GlobeMed at the George Washington University

Globemed at The George Washington University partners with Set Her Free, a non profit based out of Kampala, Uganda, to empower young women of Uganda to become self-sustaining by providing a safe environment, education, and rehabilitation. Many factors including gender discrimination relate to an overall lower social status and lack of economic self sufficiency of women reducing their power to act independently.

Women all over the world experience gender discrimination in the forms of unequal opportunities, health disparities, and sexual violence as a few examples. In Kampala, Uganda many girls and young women, many of whom are forced to move from rural villages to the city in search of other opportunities due to inability to pay for school, abuse, or a lack of a support system, partake in the sex trade as a means of survival. This gender inequality results in many negative health effects.

Through education and apprenticeships, the young women who participate in Set Her Free's school program learn valuable skills that they may not have had the ability to learn previously. When these women are given access to Set Her Free's tailoring center, they gain skills that give them the ability to work in safer environments and avoid being enslaved in sex trades. The women are provided with stable employment fostering their greater indep. and break the cycle of poverty and the sex trade.

Long-Term Impact

In the event that they require further training, structure, or support, the Tailoring Center will serve to assure the girls who have completed the program at Set Her Free a source of income while easing their transition to the workforce and while gaining important insight into running a business. This safe environment will lessen any impact that may occur after graduation. We also hope that once the Tailoring Center becomes fully established, it can be a source of income for Set Her Free.
